HISTORY

Australian Tropical Gelbvieh (ATG) had it’s beginning with the purchase of two PTIC recipients originally by Kadfam Stud, from Richard Sullivan in 1989. Shortly after, the breed came out of nowhere to stun the cattle industry in Australia taking out the Champion Interbreed title at Beef 91.

Brice and Fran Kaddatz then linked up with well known Brahman breeders, the late Charlie Borg and his wife Jean, then the late Frank and Joan Dittmann, parents of Fran Kaddatz; and in 1993 Evan and Jean Mackenzie from ‘Tantallon’ Blackwater completed the quartet in partnership.

ATG was registered in 1993.

ATG sponsored the first ‘On Property’ Gelbvieh Sale at ‘Marklands’, the Borg family property near Sarina. This took place on 6 May 1994, with several hundred people attending the Field Day and Sale of 14 bulls. The Sale resulted in a total clearance, with bulls selling to $4,750.

The ATG herd transferred from Mackay to Blackwater, then back to Gympie. With the passing and retirement of other members, the stud was ultimately transferred to the Kaddatz family. Brian Kaddatz provides most of the direct support these days.

PROGRESS

In 1994, Ron and Gail Anderson, Bar GR Gelbvieh from High Prairie, Alberta Canada, visited Mackay. This spawned a relationship which saw ATG purchase Bar GR embryos in 2005.

In partnership with the Andersons and the Volmerhausen family from Theebine near Gympie, Bar GR sent additional embryos from Canada and these genetics have found their way into prize winning herds in Australia. Significant among these is Chris Braithwaite’s Midas stud.

ATG’s first ET bull was Kadfam Adam. He has been followed by bulls from Tantallon, Bar GR(ET), Terley, Norolle and Midas studs. Each of these sires has contributed positively to herd improvement. ATG Extrovert (ET Can) has left his footprint with a quality line of females. Norolle Hornet is currently showing great promise with excellent calves on the ground. A 13 month old son recently sold to a commercial breeder for $3,500.

ATG has ET Bar GR females for sale. Embryos are also for sale.
